MUSIC MINISTRY AT CORPUS CHRISTI

The importance of music in worship is shown “The importance of music in worship is shown “very simply by the fact that the verb “to sing” (with related words such as “song”, and so forth) is one of the most commonly used words in the Bible.  It occurs 309 times in the Old Testament and 36 in the New.  When man comes into contact with God, mere speech is not enough….man’s own being is insufficient for what he has to express, and so he invites the whole of creation to become a song with him: ‘Awake, my soul! …I will sing praises to you among the nations. ‘(Psalm 57)” (The Spirit of the Liturgy, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger)

THE CONGREGATION…. “Singing is one of the primary ways that the faithful participate actively in the Liturgy.” (Music in Divine Worship, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops)
We encourage the active participation in singing at liturgy as we stay true to the roots of the best of Catholic liturgical music.

CANTORS are the musical leaders for the congregation.  They lead the singing to support full and active participation of the congregation.  Auditions for the role of cantor are required.

PARISH CHOIR… “The treasury of sacred music is to be preserved and fostered with great care. Choirs must be diligently developed.” (Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy, Article 114)

The Parish Choir sings at the 10:45am Mass every Sunday.  They rehearse Mondays from 6 to 7 pm in the church.  No previous music experience is necessary and there are no auditions.  Their musical focus is singing the best of sacred choral music from Gregorian Chant and Renaissance polyphony to the sacred Catholic musical treasures of the 21st Century.
