CORPUS CHRISTI PARISH
East Sandwich & Sagamore MA
BULLETIN: August 31, 2008

TODAY: 5TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE
DEDICATION OF CORPUS CHRISTI
CHURCH
Our church was dedicated by Bishop Coleman on August 31, 2003. We observe the anniversary each year on the last Sunday of August, this year actually on the 31st itself.

Fr. Bouchard throws open the doors to our new church, August 31, 2003

Fr. Rich Wilson, Fr.Marcel Bouchard, Bishop George Coleman, Fr. Rodney Thibault
AT CHURCH AND CHAPEL: ALL MASSES:
The anniversary is being celebrated at all Masses at their regular times, in the church and at St. Theresas. A renewal of Baptism and the sprinkling of baptismal water begins each Mass. The normal Sunday readings and prayers are replaced with those provided for each local church on their annual local solemnity.
AT CHURCH: 10:30AM MASS:
The Mass is followed by the burial of a time capsule and by special refreshments. The time capsule will include items from children and adults of our parish – examples: a T-shirt signed by all participants in this summers Vacation Bible School, greetings from the children celebrating the 5th anniversary of the church, a prayer card printed for the dedication anniversary of St. Theresa Chapel (June 2008), and reminders of St. Paulina from our friends in the Catholic Brazilian Community.
We welcome four special delegations into the embrace of our parish community:
The Brazilian Catholic Community of Hyannis was with us at the actual dedication. They came in procession, bearing the relics of St. Paulina (first saint of Brazil, canonized, 2002) for the bishop to bury under our altar as a central moment in the dedication. We welcome them this day and pray for them as they pray with us. The bones of their saint forever unite us, whatever tensions or pain we all endure.
The Community of Jesus sends an ecumenical delegation to pray for us. Their own church was dedicated in 2000, and the altars (and fonts) in both churches have been fashioned from the same block of botticino stone.
The Knights of Columbus fourth degree honor guard once more honor us by their presence. We hope that this benevolent society has great prosperity into the future.
The Order of the Holy Sepulchre is also represented. This is an ecclesiastical order whose members care for the work of our Church in the Holy Land. We particularly welcome His Excellency George Ryan, Vice Governor General of Honor.
COLORING BOOK REPRINTED, AND OTHER HISTORIC GIFTS
A new printing of the coloring book prepared for our church dedication is available – $3 for one, $5 for two. These were very popular items 5 years ago, and by now a whole new group of youngsters has arrived at coloring age.
There is also a fresh opportunity to purchase cup plates ($5) from our dedication in 2003. Also the fine history book of our diocese ($10), published just a few years ago for the diocesan centennial.
AT HOME:
On this feast, all parishioners who use the liturgy of the hours for prayer are privileged to use the texts for the common of the dedication of a church (p. 1595 in volume IV), instead of the 22nd Sunday.
Have you visited our parish web site and its photos section? – see photos from our dedication in 2003, and coverage of the items installed in 2004 (windows and statues). www.corpuschristiparish.org - there are 300 photos, so you'll need to allow time for them to load and view.

Stewardship
Ministries at Work: Music
Music serves the community by helping us to express the gift of faith within us, and to lead the community toward full active participation as we worship together. Youth vocalists, grade 3 and over with good reading skills, are welcome to become ministers of music. You need not be able to read music; however, you must be able to match pitch.
Youth choir members develop basic choral singing techniques. They also either learn to read music and/or improve their musical abilities. Rehearsals are currently held every Wednesday (except the summer) at 5:00pm – 5:45pm. The choir sings at the 8:00am Mass on Sunday and occasionally at the 10:30am Mass on Sunday.
Commitment to any organization is very important. A choir member is a member of a team. This is not a choir that sings only at Christmas and Easter. Prospective members should be able to attend rehearsals and to be at the appropriate Mass on Sunday mornings.
The music program for young people teaches them to lead worship and to develop their own musical abilities in an atmosphere of fun and fellowship. The goal of the program is to discover together the joy of worshipping God through music and to experience the great satisfaction that comes with performing music beautifully and with care.

BLESSED
SACRAMENT SANCTUARY CANDLE
During the week of August 31, the candle burning over the tabernacle in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel will be burning in memory of George M. Herterick and Joanne Shepter. Let us pray for them.
CORRECTION: Last week the Sanctuary Candle was lit in memory of Louise Campbell (not John J.), requested by Mary Sheehan.
ST. THERESA CHAPEL
Follow-up to the assembly held at the chapel last Sunday will take place at the next meeting of the Transition Task Force, scheduled for September 15. In the meantime, the four committees have begun their work. Its not too late to help; just contact Fr. Bouchard, who will put you in touch with the right person.
To our summer visitors at St. Theresa Chapel: We thank you and praise God for your worshipping with us and remind you to join us at Corpus Christi Church next summer.
ORDINARY TIME – AUTUMN
THIS THURSDAY: MOSES
The official list of Catholic saints (called The Roman Martyrology) was updated in 2004. We await an English translation of the Latin original. It incorporates many of the Old Testament figures venerated for their heroic holiness. Only a few of the thousands have a place on the universal calendar. On days not so assigned, Mass texts for any saint on that days martyrology list can be used.
Thus we dip into the 9/4 list to use Moses, a figure depicted in our church (childrens chapel) at the start of his life – when pharoahs daughter and her handmaiden found him in a basket in the Nile River. Exodus 2 is a fine story to read and to discuss with young children.
THIS FRIDAY: FIRST FRIDAY
As on all first Fridays, the Eucharist will be exposed for adoration after the 9:00am Mass until just before the 9:00am Mass on Saturday.
The 23 hours of prayer will be enhanced this month by two special times:
PRAYER AND SONG IN PORTUGUESE, BEFORE THE BLESSED SACRAMENT: 8:00pm - 9:45pm, September 5.
As usual, these hours of prayer will be led by the Brazilian Catholic Community of Hyannis.
PRAYERS OF OUR PARISH FOR THE BRAZILIAN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF HYANNIS: 9:45pm - 10:15pm, September 5.
As reported in the press, the priest who led and served this community was recently placed on leave by our bishop, when accusations of a serious nature were made against him. The community is sad, hurt, bewildered, and in need of our prayers and support. Parish members are encouraged to come to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, from 9:45pm to 10:15pm, where we can pray for these Catholics with whom we share the Eucharistic Lord.
NEXT SUNDAY: BLESSING STUDENTS AND TEACHERS:
All Masses next Sunday (and vigil Masses) will include a blessing of students, teachers, and school administrators. We pray also for the many college students leaving now for their varied campuses. To those who are going away to college – we will pray for you that you ever delight in new discoveries, and that you persevere even when all seems most difficult. We look forward to celebrating with you at Christmas!
All 3 Masses in the church on September 20 - 21 will include a blessing of Catechists, since Religious Education begins soon thereafter.
Heres a prayer for use at home, while sending off young adults to college, or while sending off younger students for the opening day of school:
Lord God,
your spirit of wisdom fills the earth
and teaches us your ways.
Look upon these students.
Let them enjoy their learning
and take delight in new discoveries.
Help them to persevere in their studies
and give them the desire to learn all things well.
Look upon all teachers.
Let them strive to share their knowledge with gentle patience
and endeavor always to bring the truth to eager minds.
Grant that all Christian students and teachers alike may follow Jesus Christ,
the way, the truth, and the life,
for ever and ever. Amen.
A WEEK FROM THURSDAY: 7TH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11
The 7TH anniversary of the terrorist attacks (and of the victims from our own parish) will be marked at our parish by special prayer on September 11. The 9:00am Mass prayers will be for those who lost their lives, and Mass will be followed (weather permitting) by a brief commemoration at the plaza flag pole. There, well have a prayer and the singing of our national anthem.
Here is a prayer for use at home:
God our Father,
maker and lover of peace,
to know you is to live,
and to serve you is to reign.
All our faith is in your saving help;
protect us from men of violence
and keep us safe from weapons of hate.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PAPAL PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR SEPTEMBER 2008:
Holy Father Benedict has asked all Christians to pray for these intentions:
- That Christians may defend and protect refugees.
- That every Christian family may be a small evangelizing community which is responsive to the needs of others.
More information about each months intentions can be found at www.apostlesofprayer.org.
